What is HS Code? What is GTIP Code? What is it used for, How is it detected?

What is an HS Code?

The HS Code (Harmonized System Code) is an internationally standardized system for classifying goods in global trade. It was developed by the World Customs Organization (WCO) and is used by over 200 countries. The HS Code typically consists of 6 digits, but countries can extend it to 8 or 10 digits for more detailed classification.

Structure of an HS Code:

  1. First 2 Digits: Represent the Chapter (broad category, e.g., chemicals, textiles).

  2. Next 2 Digits: Represent the Heading (specific category within the chapter).

  3. Last 2 Digits: Represent the Subheading (further details about the product).

For example:

  • HS Code 2935: "Heterocyclic compounds with nitrogen hetero-atom(s) only."

What is a GTIP Code?

The GTIP Code (Gümrük Tarife İstatistik Pozisyonu) is Turkey's national extension of the HS Code. It is used for customs declarations, statistical tracking, and trade policies in Turkey. The GTIP Code typically consists of 8 or 10 digits, with the first 6 digits matching the international HS Code.

Structure of a GTIP Code:

  1. First 6 Digits: Match the international HS Code.

  2. 7th and 8th Digits: Turkey-specific subcategories.

  3. 9th and 10th Digits: Used for statistical purposes (optional).

For example:

  • GTIP Code 2935.00.90.00.00: "Other heterocyclic compounds."

How to Determine an HS or GTIP Code?

1. Identify the Product:

  • Determine the product's nature (e.g., chemical, machinery, food, textile).

  • Note its material, purpose, and physical/chemical properties.

2. Use Official Resources:

3. Online Tools:

4. Seek Professional Help:

  • Customs Brokers: They can help classify complex products.

  • Trade Consultants: Experts in international trade and customs regulations.

Why Are HS and GTIP Codes Important?

  1. Customs Procedures: Required for importing and exporting goods.

  2. Taxes and Duties: Determine the applicable customs duties and taxes.

  3. Trade Statistics: Used for tracking and analyzing trade data.

  4. Compliance: Ensure adherence to regulations (e.g., REACH, GHS).
