Tall oil, also known as liquid rosin or tallol, is a viscous yellow-black odorous liquid obtained as a by-product of the kraft process of wood pulp manufacture, primarily from coniferous trees. The name "tall oil" originates from the Swedish word "tallolja," which means "pine oil".
Chemical Composition: Contains resin acids (mainly abietic acid and its isomers), fatty acids (mainly palmitic acid, oleic acid, and linoleic acid), fatty alcohols, unsaponifiable sterols, and other alkyl hydrocarbon derivatives.
Appearance: Viscous yellow-black liquid with a strong odor.
Industrial Applications: Used in the production of adhesives, coatings, inks, and rubber.
Chemical Industry: Acts as a raw material for the production of various chemicals, including fatty acids and rosin.
Biofuels: Can be processed into biofuels.
Tall oil is produced during the kraft process, where high alkalinity and temperature convert the esters and carboxylic acids in rosin into soluble sodium soaps of lignin, rosin, and fatty acids. The spent cooking liquor, known as black liquor, is concentrated, and the soaps are skimmed off and collected. These soaps are then acidified with sulfuric acid to produce crude tall oil (CTO).
