Fumed silica, also known as pyrogenic silica, is a very fine, high-purity silica powder.

  • Production: Obtained by flame hydrolysis of silicon tetrachloride or by vaporizing quartz sand in a 3000 °C electric arc.

  • Key Property: Extremely small particles with a large surface area, making it an excellent thickener and anti-caking agent.

AEROSIL R 202 is a fumed silica surface-treated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS).
