Hazard Class 6.1(a)
Packing Group II
Toxicity A designated hazardous waste (EPA). It is a colorless to
yellow solid, melting at about 20°C. TDI and MDI (diphenylmethane diisocyanate) are used in the manufacture of polyurethane foams by reaction with polyhydroxy compounds. These
foams are used for insulation, upholstering, etc. Exposure is
commonly by inhalation of the vapor. Both TDI and MDI can
cause irritation of eyes and mucous membranes, in severe
cases leading to pulmonary edema. Sensitization to TDI is
common and frequently rapid, leading to an allergic reaction
and some loss of lung function. In the United Kingdom, the
threshold limit value is 0.02 ppm for not more than 20 min, or
0.005 ppm for 8 h.

Downstream Products Polyurethane

Nature

This product is a colorless or light yellow transparent liquid with pungent odor, which will turn yellow slowly under ultraviolet light irradiation. It can react with hydroxyl, water, Amine and other compounds containing active hydrogen, and can also be self-polymerized under certain conditions to generate carbamate, urea, biuret, isocyanurate, etc, is an important raw material of polyurethane.

Preparation Method

toluene diisocyanate was obtained by reaction with phosgene (COCl2) using toluene nitration and hydrogenation product as raw material. The synthesis of toluene diisocyanate (TDI) by photo-gasification is widely used in industry. The process has a batch and continuous process. Large Units are mainly produced by a continuous process.

Use

used as a variety of polyurethane materials such as flexible foam, coatings, Cast Elastomers, pavement materials, waterproof coatings and adhesives and other raw materials. TDI can be used as modified TDI, Dimer, trimer, adduct prepolymer, and the like.

Safety

TDI has strong toxicity and reactivity. The volatiles on the skin, eyes and mucous membranes have a strong stimulating effect, make people tears, Laryngalgia, Cough, long-term contact can cause bronchitis, a few cases of asthma, bronchiectasis and even pulmonary heart disease. When the concentration of TDI in the air is more than 0. 05mg/L, the human body will have severe Cough and shortness of breath. The maximum allowable concentration in air is 0.02 mg/m3. TDI is susceptible to reaction with water and tissues in the skin and body. Therefore, the ventilation device should be installed in the operation site. The operator should wear protective equipment and prohibit the product from contacting the skin during use. Galvanized iron drum packaging, net weight 250kg per barrel. Hazardous materials shall be stored and transported according to regulations. Sealed steel barrels shall be used for shipment, and barrel damage shall be prevented during loading, unloading and transportation. If the packaging barrel is damaged, or the seal is damaged, the barrel product should be used as soon as possible, otherwise it should be sealed with nitrogen and oxygen. Products should be stored in a cool, ventilated and dry place, and keep the container closed, storage temperature of 15~40. To prevent rain, sun exposure. At the same time, the product is combustible, in the transport, storage and use of the process should pay attention to fire. If the product solidifies below the specified storage temperature, it must be melted before use (direct baking with open flame is prohibited) and the product in the barrel is fully mixed and uniform.

production method 1. It is prepared by the action of 2, 4-diaminotoluene and phosgene. First, dissolve the solid diaminotoluene in chlorinated benzene, raise the temperature to 70 ℃ under stirring to obtain diaminotoluene chlorobenzene solution, put the oxidized benzene recovered by light gasification into a low-temperature phosgene pot, add a certain amount of liquid phosgene, add the prepared diaminotoluene solution dropwise under stirring, perform phosgenization at 40 ℃, then put the low-temperature phosgenization material into a high-temperature pot for high-temperature phosgenization, and ventilate while heating for about 4 hours, the reaction is generally carried out at 120~125 ℃. After the reaction is completed, it is obtained by using nitrogen gas, distillation and rectification.
