C₆H₅ (Phenyl Ring)
Description: The phenoxyethanol molecule consists of a phenyl ring attached to an ethylene glycol ether group. The aromatic ring provides lipophilic properties, while the hydroxyl group provides hydrophilic properties. This amphiphilic structure allows for partial solubility in both water and oils. The Log P value of 1.16 indicates moderate lipophilicity.

Description: Phenoxyethanol is produced by the reaction of phenol with ethylene oxide under basic conditions. In this Williamson ether synthesis reaction, phenol (C₆H₅OH) is converted to phenoxide anion using sodium hydroxide (NaOH). This anion attacks ethylene oxide, opening the epoxide ring to form 2-phenoxyethanol. The reaction is carried out at approximately 120-160°C for 2-4 hours. Purification is achieved by vacuum distillation to obtain high-purity (>99%) product. By-products may include diethylene glycol phenyl ether and polymeric phenyl ethers.
