SECTION 5: CHELATION AND INHIBITION MECHANISM

Parameter Description
Chelating Agent Heptadentate ligand (7-coordinate)
Donor Atoms 3 Phosphonate Oxygen atoms + 1 Amine Nitrogen atom
Metal Ion Binding Forms stable complexes with metal ions
Scale Inhibition Prevents precipitation of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) and other scales
Threshold Effect Prevents scale formation at very low concentrations (1-10 ppm)
Crystal Distortion Distorts crystal growth of scale-forming salts (lattice distortion)
Corrosion Inhibition Shows synergistic effects when used with zinc and phosphates
Synergistic Effect Shows synergistic effects with zinc salts, polyphosphates, and other chemicals
pH Performance Effective across a wide pH range

Description: ATMP acts by forming stable, water-soluble complexes with metal ions. The chelation process involves the coordination of the metal ion by the three phosphonate groups and one amine nitrogen atom of the ATMP molecule. This encapsulating structure effectively "traps" the metal ion, preventing it from participating in precipitation and scale formation. ATMP exhibits a "threshold effect" which prevents scale formation at very low concentrations (1-10 ppm). Through lattice distortion, it disrupts crystal growth and prevents scale formation.
