Potassium Cyanide (KCN) is the potassium salt of hydrocyanic acid (HCN). It consists of a potassium cation (K⁺) and a cyanide anion (CN⁻). The cyanide ion features a carbon atom triple-bonded to a nitrogen atom (C≡N). This linear, highly polar ion is the source of the compound's extreme toxicity. The cyanide ion binds to the ferric ion (Fe³⁺) in cytochrome c oxidase, blocking the mitochondrial respiratory chain and inhibiting cellular oxygen utilization, leading to tissue hypoxia and rapid death.
